My friend Cliff and I explored a rugged section of the Chattahoochee National Forest in Union County. We were looking for some remnants of old growth forest, and also had an old chimney site, which Cliff had visited before, on our radar. We wound up finding five home sites, with chimneys in various states of disintegration. |

Cliff, between a couple of large Tulip trees growing in a steep boulderfield. |
First homesite find of the day (UN41)... On our way up the mountain, I was making a pit stop, and spied a pile of rocks not far away. Checking it out, the corner of this old collapsed chimney was visible. |
A good sized Hickory tree |
Our second chimney of the day, a real beauty (UN42)... |

Reenactment of the scene from a 1926 photo The lower photo generally shows the same viewpoint, 94 years later. Cliff sits on the same rock door stoop that Ranger Arthur Woody sat on in the B&W photo. The cabin and fire tower are long gone... |
The fire tower foundation stones can still be seen. There is a pile like this at each of the four corners, in a 20 foot square. |
Big Tulip Tree, 155 inches in circumference |
Third chimney of the day (UN43), fallen in but better than most that I find. |

There was another stone pile in front of the chimney that I first thought was a second chimney, but there wasn't enough rock and it just didn't look right. Not sure what it was.... |
Chimney 4 Another collapsed one, but it's obvious what it was... |
Chimney 4, with chimney 5 (also collapsed) in the background (UN44). At first we thought these were from both ends of a two chimney house, but the chimneys aren't aligned with each other. There must have been two dwellings next to each other. |

Remains of chimney 5, visible in background of previous photo... |
