Limited vein mining was conducted at the Thurman Mine in the late 1800s. Several shafts and a couple of tunnels made up the operation here. A row of prospect pits can also be seen along the ridge top. |
Collapsed shaft "... a shaft, diameter 20 feet, depth 15 feet. At the bottom of the shaft are two adits leading off in opposite directions. Only one is accessible. It runs along the strike of the country rock for 60 feet and exits into a trench." |
Long trench This is the trench mentioned in the previous caption. |
Head of the trench, with slumped opening |
Slumped opening where the adit mentioned in the first caption ran into the trench |
Tailings pile below the trench |
A shorter trench appeared to have an opening at the end. |
I can fit through that; hopefully it's a tunnel / adit! |
It most definitely is. |
The tunnel starts out kind of low, just over 4 feet high. |
"P36B is an adit 350 feet SW of shaft P36A. The adit runs slightly sinuous for a distance of over 175 feet. Adit width is 4 feet, height 6 feet. The country rock is amphibolite whose strike is parallel to the adit trend." |

An old nest on a shelf... |
Further along... |
A few rocks have fallen from the ceiling over the years... |
The adit gently curved to the left and right along its length. |
Another small old rock collapse... |
I thought the white object in the distance was going to be some calcite or something. |
But it was an almost mummified animal. I'm guessing some kind of canine - dog or coyote(?) |
A small pocket dug on the right side... |
A couple of small cave-ins ahead. |
Small earthen ceiling collapse. |
End of the line... |
