Botanical Survey - 1 Towns County, GA Late July 2022 |

As mentioned elsewhere, I was asked to continue a plant survey on a large tract of private land, that was begun last year by a friend who is a "real" botanist. This was my first visit, as an initial orientation and to get the lay of the land. I had a gut feeling that the environment was conducive for Three Birds Orchids, and the highlight of my day was finding another new population, in full bloom. Since they bloom all at once, for only one day, I would have likely missed these tiny beauties if I had gone on a different day! Since I wanted to get familiar with the property, I didn't spend a lot of time surveying, but did take some pics of a few blooms in addition to the TBOs. |
There is a nice waterfall on the property that I visited first. |

A few more shots of the waterfall... |
A nice clump of American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) |
Horsebalm (Collinsonia canadensis) |
Crane Fly Orchid (Tipularia discolor) |
I was kneeling down to photograph the Tipularia in the previous image when I spotted a single Three Birds Orchid flower! I looked all around, but only found two more tiny plants, neither with flowers. |
I found Allegheny Monkey Flower (Mimulus ringens) along the banks of a wet area. |
One of the Bolete species... I didn't try to ID the species, as that would have required slicing the mushroom. |
Plantainleaf Sedge (Carex plantaginia) |
Moving to another area of the property, I found a nice cluster of Three Birds Orchids. |
Three Birds Orchid (Triphora trianthophoros) |
Another nicely colored specimen. |
Another clump of TBOs, even larger than the first one! |

I saw a few Platanthera ciliaris on the way out... |
