March 2018 - Waterfalls on Hedden and Law Ground Creeks A fun afternoon in the woods with visits to a couple of waterfalls that are definitely "off the beaten path", along with a little botanizing:
Falls on Hedden Creek This requires a short but steep bushwhack through thick rhododendron to reach the base.
Upper section of the falls The heavy flow produced a lot of spray, so I didn't take any shots from too close to the base.
Oconee Bells (Shortia galacifolia) I barely caught these in bloom; only two plants still had petals.
These rare wildflowers are only found in a few counties in South Carolina and Georgia Some folks believe that this population was transplanted from another location.
Trailing Arbutus (Epigaea repens) With the typical pink flowers.
Trailing Arbutus, with less typical white flowers.
Lower levels, Falls on Law Ground Creek Be prepared for a nasty bushwhack if you want to see these falls!
