Old Home Sites and Other Local Historical Stuff Fall 2019 - Union County, GA |

I went out with my friend Sheldon H. on a nice mid November day, exploring some old home sites and finding some other historical stuff in Union County. |
We were unsure what this concrete foundation was used for... It has some sort of trough structure on the right side. There was a well behind it, that was filled in by the Forest Service decades ago. It's next to an old home site where the collapsed pile of an old stone chimney is visible. |
This double firebox chimney stood in the middle of a large old home (UN19). Some of the stone foundations still surround it to show the outline of the building. |
Note the large lintel stone above the fireplace. It must have taken several strong men to put that in place! |
The other side of the chimney, showing the second firebox. The bottom part of the chimney has some concrete mortar, but only a small bit of clay chinking remains to hold the upper stones together. |
A section of the former house's stone foundation. |
Nearby was the old stone foundation of another long-gone building. No sign of a chimney here; just some old stove pipe. Perhaps this was the site of a "weaning cabin", or ? |
View across Lake Notteley at Davenport Mountain. Most of the fall foliage had dropped after the previous week's cold snap. |
This rounded protuberance was exposed in the silt near the (winter-level) shore of the lake. Scraping the dirt away, it appears to be a stone bowl preform that was in the early stages of being chipped out of the bedrock. |

One of the Pelt Lichens (Peltigera sp.) |
Remains of an old radiator from a Model T automobile. |
Looking closely, one can still make out the Ford logo. |
Model T fender, probably from the same auto. |
An old bucket |
Part of a cast iron stove, with a nice design... |
This stonework is all that remains of the old Swanson Grist and Saw Mill in the Spilo community. |

Old Spilo community (photo courtesy of S. Henderson) This photo shows the Swanson Mill before it was washed away by a major flood in the early 1940s. Note the two buildings at the right rear of this image, and then look at the next photo. |
This is what's left of the two buildings at right rear of the previous image. Nothing remains of the building on the right, which was a store, except the old stone chimney. The building on the left remains standing, although it is in very poor shape. |
Remains of the stone chimney. The old store that stood here was built and operated by Jess and Carlton Phillips. |
