When I came across a reference to this old mill in Union County, I went looking for it. It wasn't the time of year to be exploring and photographing old ruins in the woods! I would have to return on a cloudy day in winter when the leaves have fallen and the undergrowth has died back. The mill goes back to the 1850s, and originally ground wheat, rye and corn. A turbine generator was installed next to the mill in 1928 and supplied power to sections of Blairsville for almost 20 years. A couple of big floods eventually washed away most of the mill structure, although stone foundation walls and piers remain. The mill dam was breached long ago, probably by the same floods; the concrete generator building still stands. |

It's hard to see with the undergrowth, but at the center are the steps to the former mill's entrance. |

I have no idea what this piece of machinery is. It's within the old mill's foundation walls. |
|
Maybe something to do with the textile industry(?), although I haven't found anything similar... |
