Old Gumlog Gold Mine - Visit 1 Towns-Union County, GA |

Mining on a small scale was carried out here at intervals for over half a century. It was reported that in some of the old works, veins several feet in thickness were mined. In 1908, E. C. Wellborn and Fletch Robinson were installing a stamp mill, and preparing to clean out several of the old shafts. We had permission to explore the area, which is on private property. Photo conditions were horrible in the sun, so I only took a few pics. I need to return on an overcast day, and get some better photos. The land owner had told Sheldon about some pits located on a low ridge at the rear of the property. We went there first, but those depressions appeared to be just small prospect pits, so we headed over to where I suspected the main mining operations had been located. |

Sheldon in one of the collapsed shafts. From what we saw, this was probably the main shaft at the mine. |
Although caved in, there was a small hole that continued downward. |

From down in the shaft |

One of the many old cuts at the mine. |
We found two old tunnels, both with slumped / collapsed entrances. We couldn't tell how far back they went, but the first had a hole just big enough for me to wiggle down and stretch my arms out with the camera to take a few photos. Sheldon had to pull me back out by my legs! |
It sure looks like the tunnel goes back a ways! I knew I would have to check it out when we visited again. |
Entrance to the second slumped tunnel. With the horrible lighting, I hadn't photographed the mouth of the first one, although the lighting here wasn't any better. This one only had a small opening, but there was a strong current of air coming out. |
