Butler - Kirkland Cemetery Cherokee National Forest, Polk Co., TN |

This cemetery is currently known as the Butler Cemetery, but it was originally known as the Kirkland Cemetery. The Butlers moved to this remote area around 1890; but the Kirklands had first settled here in the 1840s. The community was originally known as Kirkland. I don't know if this family is related to the infamous outlaw John Kirkland. A number of the gravestones here were hand-carved. |
