The Devil's Den Habersham County, GA April 2022 |

The Devil's Den is a little known (outside of locals) rock outcrop & cave near the Habersham-Rabun County line. Due to our geology, Northeast Georgia doesn't have the better known solution / karst type caves which are common in the Northwest part of the state. The cave here is a tectonic cave, created by the mass movement and resultant cracking/fracturing of bedrock. |

SW approach to the rock outcrops at the Devil's Den |
Sarah pointing out an Asplenium that is growing out of the outcrop. I was looking for a rarer fern that grows here, and didn't learn until later where it is located. |

The dark hole is the entrance to the Devil's Den |

Approaching the cave... |
Cave entrance As one enters the cave, you are immediately met by a rock wall. Climbing over the mossy, dripping boulder, you have the option of turning right or left into the narrow chasm. |
The entrance constantly drips, creating a lush moss cover on the rocks. I was careful while climbing over this to minimize damage to the greenery. I was about to head into the dark crack to the right of center. |
Ducking through the water, I turned right into the narrow chasm. |
It soon widened a bit, and I turned around to shoot the entrance. |
The floor dropped in steps as I continued inward. |
This rock wedged in the chasm reminded me of a Mayan statue head. Maybe there is something to the suggestions of Mayans in the north Georgia mountains! lol |
More large rocks inside the cave... |
Heading back, I took another shot up toward the entrance. |
Another cavern veers off below the cave floor. |
Almost back to the entrance |
Drips and light at the entrance |
The other (left) side of the cave is narrower, so I didn't go far. I was already pretty wet... |
Out of the darkness and back into the daylight! |
More big rock outcrops adjacent to the cave area. |
The series of outcrops goes on for a ways.... |
Under a rock shelter Note the unusual "pocket" eroded into the rock about 1/3 distance from the right side. |
Weird "pocket" eroded into the rock face You could hide a baby in here with room to spare... |
