The Hollywood Asbestos deposit was mined and milled a hundred years ago (1924-1927). The operation was run by Claude & Hoyt Adair, Otis & L.B. Ivester, Charles Medlock, and Wrens Spivy, funded by the American National Bank of Nashville, TN. The remains of the milling operation are mostly long gone, but lots of evidence remains of the mining itself. |

Coming in from the back side, I crested a hill and looked down into Cut 1, one of three large excavations here. |

The mine area is covered with pits, waste piles, and deep cuts. |

Small pit, with a waste pile in the rear. |

I came across an area surrounded by 8 foot tall fencing. It enclosed what must be a deep shaft, now covered by chain link fencing (and leaves!). |
|
I haven't figured out what this stone-lined rectangular excavation was used for. |
|
Looking across the rectangular excavation, a trench leading to Cut 3 is at upper right. |

Concrete footing structures at the edge of the woods above the mine cuts. The main mill was below the mines, so I'm not sure what these footings supported. |

Part of the mine mill operation. The mining took place on a hillside, with the mill at the base along the old Tallulah Falls Railroad. (photo from Georgia Archives, dated 1926) |

Another old photo of the mine operation. Oddly, the plant seems to be abandoned in this image, yet some of the structures/additions visible in the previous photo haven't been built yet(?) (photo from Georgia Archives) |
