A trek from our house to not only check out the spring wildflower blooms around Cherry Cove, but to also look for the remains of an old home site over the NC line, that shows on the old 1903 topo maps. |

Arriving at a flat area at the intersection of two creek branches, I noticed some groups of flowering plants that seemed out of place. I found this flat pile of rocks with a tree growing up through the center, which I believe was the chimney of the old home site I was looking for. Between the terrible lighting and the spring foliage, I think I need to explore this area further next winter. |
Showy Orchis orchid (Galearis spectabilis). Flowers are not yet fully open. |
I was about to rock-hop across a creek, and was eying my route when a Black-bellied salamander (Desmognathus quadramaculatus) jumped up on one of my planned stepping stones. It looked a little worse for wear, missing its tail, etc. Not having my long lens, this image was greatly cropped from a photo taken from the opposite bank. |
