A satisfying visit to a rare cataract bog, in the Mountain Bridge Wilderness of South Carolina. I saw a number of interesting & uncommon plants in flower, including 3 carnivorous species: |
Driving to the destination, I passed Table Rock State Park. |
At the Preserve, the trail passes by an old home place, where this chimney stands. |
Unfortunately, morons have recently vandalized the chimney and it probably won't be standing for long. This photo, with the chimney still in relatively good condition, was taken less than a year ago! (Photo by Liene from the "Femme au foyer" blog page.) Update: Per Liene, the chimney was removed by SC-DNR not long after my visit for safety reasons. |
The Pitcher Plants were the first of several attractions at this site. |
Mountain Sweet Pitcher Plant (Sarracenia jonesii) |
The pitchers were a little past their peak, but still lovely to see. |
The next star of the show was the Grass Pinks... |
Grass Pink (Calopogon tuberosus) |
These were found in a variety of shades of pink |
Next up were the Bladderworts |
Horned Bladderwort (Utricularia cornuta) |
Prior to visiting this site, I had only encountered small quantities of this species |
It was amazing to see the numbers of this carnivorous plant blooming here |
Sundews were next on the agenda |
Roundleaf Sundew (Drosera rotundifolia) |
At least three clusters of flower buds are visible on this plant |
I also photographed a few other plants at the Preserve: |
Fruit of the Yellowroot plant (Xanthorhiza simplicissima) |
Mountain Laurel blooms (Kalmia latifolia) |
Twisted-hair Spikemoss (Selaginella tortipila) |
Piedmont Ragwort (Packera millefolium) Not the greatest specimen; this was meant as a place-holder, but I forgot to go back and photograph the plants! |
