Crisped Bunchflowers and More Near Scaly Knob Late July 2019 |

I had given friends directions to a soapstone outcrop, to look for a rare lichen that grows on ultramafic rock. In route, they came across a new (to us) plant in bloom, the Crisped Bunchflower (Melanthium hybridum). I had never heard of this species, much less seen it. The next day I made the climb and found three flowering plants. |

Flowers. This species was previously known as Veratrum hybridum. |

Single flower - detail |
This species seems to have an affinity for Veratrum parviflorum, some of which is visible here. |

Ambush bugs (Phymatinae ) mating I was shooting a close-up of a Melanthium hybridum flower, and noticed these two in my display, caught in the act. Not the greatest quality, as they were tiny, and this is heavily cropped. |

I also came across lots of mushrooms / fungi along my route: |
An emerging Bolete - Retiboletus ornatipes |
Indigo Milk Cap (Lactarius Indigo) |
Unidentified mushrooms |
Hundreds of teeny, tiny mushrooms on an old log |
Another Milk Cap species (Lactifluus sp.) |
Mushrooms and Fraser Magnolia seed head |
Amanita species |

Downy Rattlesnake Plantain orchid (Goodyera pubescens) |
