Several days after visiting Buck Knob, I decided to check out the outcrops on Old Bill Knob. The first half or so of this album is images from the walk in. |
On the hike in, I saw my first group of Pinesap (Monotropa hypopitys) for 2019. |
Downy Rattlesnake Plantain Orchid (Goodyera pubescens) about to bloom |
This Barred Owl (Strix varia) was checking me out on the way in. I was botanizing, so naturally didn't bring a long lens; had to make do and crop heavily! |
White Bergamot, aka Basil Bee Balm (Monarda clinopodia) |
Black Cohosh (Actaea racemosa) |
Yellow Jewelweed (Impatiens pallida) |
Nearing the rock outcrop, I came across these Galiella rufa. I thought these cool cup fungi looked like Reese's Cups! |
View from a section of the rock outcrop. Part of the outcrop that I visited a few days before can be seen on the mountain at right. |
Quill Fameflower (Phemeranthus teretifolius) Finding this colony of plants today (and in bloom, to boot!) was a personal first. |
Close-up of a Quill Fameflower bloom. These flowers only bloom in late afternoon, so my timing was good. |
More Quill Fameflower, showing their usual habitat. Other common names for this plant are Rock Portulaca, and Appalachian Rock Pink. |
Close-up of a pair of Quill Fameflowers. |
One more example of a Quill Fameflower plant growing on the rock outcrop. |
Stone Mountainmint (Pycnanthemum curvipes) is uncommon, and was scattered around the rock outcrop |
As I discovered at Buck Knob, Showy Beardtongue (Penstemon smallii) is often found with Stone Mountainmint. |
Shrubby St. John's Wort (Hypericum prolificum) |
