On an early June day, I decided to explore a rocky outcrop on the side of Gumlog Mountain: |
Bushwhacking to the outcrop, I saw lots of Four-leaf Milkweed (Asclepias quadrifolia). |
Virginia Spiderwort (Tradescantia virginiana). Possibly Zig-zag Spiderwort (Tradescantia subaspera var. montana) This was growing all along the edges of the outcrops. |
Waxy Meadow Rue (Thalictrum revolutum) - female flowers |
This might also be Waxy Meadow Rue - with female flowers. |
Fire Pink (Silene virginica), growing on a cliff face. |
A nice trio of flowers... |

Showy Beardtongue (Penstemon smallii) |
Showy Beardtongue (Penstemon smallii). These are found in only two or three counties in north Georgia. |
Southeastern Flowering Spurge (Euphorbia pubentissima). |
Southeastern Flowering Spurge - single flower. |
Young Sickle-pod Rock Cress (Borodinia canadensis) (formerly Boechera canadensis.) |
Quill Fameflower (Phemeranthus teretifolius) These pink flowers don't open until late afternoon, and each one lasts for only a day. This uncommon species only grows on the very thin soils of large rock outcrops. |
I was a little early (calendar-wise) to catch these in good bloom. In the past I have found them blooming well in mid June; today I saw mostly buds, which can be seen in this image. |
I saw a number of these small "bees" pollinating the Fameflowers. It is an Eastern Calligrapher Syrphid Fly (Toxomerus geminatus). |
Venus' Looking Glass (Triodanis perfoliata). |
