1 - Around Lake Nottely, Union Co. February 2022
My friend Sheldon and I boated around the shores of Lake Nottely, exploring several old home sites. The photos here show some of the other interesting things we saw.

It would be interesting to know how these boulders settled in this position.
From the opposite side... It appeared that the rock at lower left foreground had cleaved off the top rock along the flat surface.
This wall sure looks man-made, but it's a natural dike...
Another section of "wall" stands in front of the other one. There were a number of these natural dikes extending out of the bedrock along this region of lake shore.
Nearby, we found these odd "spheres" in the rock.
They reminded me of soapstone bowl preforms, only in miniature. Over the years I've seen a lot of geological features that make me scratch my head as to how they formed.
Another sphere, and rounded depressions which probably held similar spheres before they detached at some time in the past.
Another rock depression If I'd come across this by itself, I might have thought it was a cupule or small mortar, but seeing the other examples here, I know it's naturally formed.
2 - We also made a stop at the former site of the Ocean Tate Grist Mill near the NC state line. Sometime around 2015, the aging mill was disassembled and then reconstructed at Meeks Park in Blairsville.
All that remains are foundation stones and the water-wheel supports.

Elaine took this photo of the reconstructed mill last spring at Meeks Park.

3 - Abandoned farm near the Osborn community (2023)
This was the home of Ed and Bonnie Moss, grandparents of my friend Madge. The Lower Hightower School, a 3-room schoolhouse, was originally near the log house.
The old log home. Sad to see it abandoned and just falling apart.
Log corners. The logs were all cut on the property by Mr. Moss.
Stone chimney and side wall.
One side of the log house. Looking in the window, I could see a bedroom with a bed still made.
Shed and barn
The barn is pretty big...
Stone wall that continues and acts as a lower wall of the barn.
