1 - Fords in the Woods, White Co., GA Late November 2021 For the past year I've had a location with several potential homesites on my radar. The old maps show four fairly close dwellings from the turn of the century (ca 1900). The old structures were (supposed to be) along an old woods road that followed up a branch into a narrow cove. Like so many steep creek-side locations in the SE, it turned out to be a slow bushwhack, thick with rhododendron and blow-down. The homesite search ended in disappointment - of the four supposed locations, I only located one, and its chimney was long collapsed. But I did make another unusual and interesting find... |
I came across the ruins of an old auto and a pickup. Maybe some old moonshine runners? Who knows... |
I thought the sedan might be a Ford, but wasn't sure about the truck. (As it turned out, both were Fords from the 1940s...) |
The auto had the general styling of 1940s Fords |

Usually the hood emblems help to ID the make / model / year of a vehicle. |
But in this case, the upper portion of the hood ornament was missing... |
...and the front badge was broken. Although an "8" was visible. Many autos from this period incorporated an 8 or V8 in their badges. |
The badge / emblem turned out to be key in identifying the model and year. I found this 1948 Super Deluxe badge to be a pefect match. |

Here's a restored version of the same model. |
Sedan rear - the oval window is another identifying feature. |
Another rear view of a restored model. |
Rear trunk latch... |
I could tell from the grill that the pickup truck is a 1940s Ford. (thanks to research that evening after returning home...) |
But I haven't yet determined the exact year. There was a lot of variation in many of the post-war models... |
Rear frame of the truck; the bed is missing. Note that both vehicles have had trees fall on top of them... |
View into the truck engine compartment. |
Remains of the only chimney I found all day. It has been collapsed for a long time... |

2 - Jeeps in the Deep (Woods), Rabun Co., GA March 2020 While tracing the route of the old Blue Ridge Railroad, I came across a Jeep graveyard. |
