In previous years, I've organized the wildflower albums from this area (Chunky Gal Tr, Park Gap, Deep Gap, Yellow Mtn) by location. This year, I hit 2-3-4 various spots on a given day, so I decided to just lump the highlights into one album for the general area. 1 - Late April 2022 |
Dutchman's Breeches, or Britches ( Dicentra cucullaria) |
Squirrel Corn (Dicentra canadensis) |
Wood Betony, aka Lousewort (Pedicularis canadensis) |
Trillium erectum - red form |
Trillium erectum var. album - cream form |
Trillium grandiflorum |
Carolina Spring Beauties (Claytonia caroliniana) |
There were still lots of Dimpled Trout Lily (Erythronium umbilicatum) blooming at the upper elevations. |
Wood Anemone (Anemone quinquefolia) |
Large-flowered Bellwort (Uvularia grandiflora) |
Dwarf Ginseng (Nanopanax trifolius) |
It was hard to walk without stepping on something (mostly Trillium grandiflorum in this pic). |
Blue Cohosh (Caulophyllum thalictroides) was just starting to bloom. Most were either in bud or just newly rising leaf stalks. |
Trillium erectum var. alba (along with a couple of T. grandiflorum). |
Yellow Mandarin (Prosartes lanuginosa) were also just coming up. Only a few had any flowers blooming yet. |
2 - Early May 2022 |
Gaywings (Polygala paucifolia) I was too early when I looked for these three weeks prior, and today they were mostly bloomed out. |
Painted Trillium (Trillidium undulatum) |
Most of these that I saw were past their prime, but I still found some nice ones. |
Did I mention that this is my favorite Trillium species? |
A huge old burl, about 4 feet in diameter. It looked like this had been cut out of a large tree, about three feet in diameter, when the area was last logged decades ago. |
White, or Speckled Wood Lily (Clintonia umbellulata), just coming into bud. |
A clump of Trillium grandiflorum, the flowers turning pink with age. |
Canada Mayflower (Maianthemum canadense The woods floor was carpeted with these plants in several spots, but they were just starting to flower. |
Flower cluster of Umbrella Leaf (Diphylleia cymosa). |
Showy Orchis (Galearis spectabilis) These orchids were in about perfect shape today. |
