1 - Mid August 2022 I explored the area around the Little Buck Creek Bog, and then followed a branch up the northern slope of Yellow Mtn, looking for early fall wildflowers. |
American Jumpseed (Persicaria virginiana) |
The Jumpseed was growing next to where I parked my truck. Not very good photos, but I wanted a record of the plant's occurrence here. |
New York Ironweed (Vernonia noveboracensis) This and the next several photos were taken around the bog perimeter. |
Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis) |
Bees on Sweet Pepperbush (Clethra alnifolia). |
Virginia Meadow Beauty (Rhexia virginica) These were past their prime, and there were only a few decent flowers... |
Winged Monkey Flower (Mimulus alatus) |
Appalachian Bunchflower (Veratrum parviflorum) This species, a somewhat reluctant bloomer, was flowering everywhere. |
Pearl Crescent (Phyciodes tharos) |
Following a branch, I encountered a nice population of Monkshood. |
Southern Monkshood (Aconitum uncinatum) |
These are always a joy to come across in the late summer. |
But beware - all parts of the plant contain poisonous alkaloids! |
Scarlet Beebalm (Monarda didyma) This was growing amongst the Monkshood, but was mostly bloomed out for the season. |
There were a lot of fungi growing near the creek branch... |
Pear-shaped Puffball (was Lycoperdon pyriforme; transferred to Apioperdon pyriforme). These often have tiny spines when young and fresh, as seen in this photo. |
More mature specimens of the Pear-shaped Puffball. lacking the spines... |
A big clump of coral fungi. |
Club, or spindle, fungus (Clavulinopsis sp.) |
This big old honker was almost 10 inches across! |
2 - Two weeks later, I was visiting some nearby spots, so stopped by this same general area... September 1, 2022 |
Chinese Bush Clover (Lespedeza cuneata) |
At least I'm pretty sure this is not one of the native Lespedezas...
Common Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum) |
Sneezeweed (Helenium autumnale) |
I came across some nice Turtleheads blooming in the creek. |
Mountain Turtlehead (Chelone obliqua) |
Scarlet Beebalm (Monarda didyma) There were still a few in flower along the creek. |
Beechdrops (Epifagus virginiana) A parasite of the American Beech... |
Primrose (Oenothera sp.) |
I had somehow missed the Blue Vervain when I was here two weeks ago, and now it was all bloomed out... |
