Some uncommon botanical finds seen during several explorations in early Spring 2020 April 8, 2020: |
Dwarf Ginseng (Panax trifolius, soon to be Nanopanax trifolious) |
Dwarf Ginseng Flower It had taken me a long time to come across this wildflower in the woods. |
They are uncommon but can be locally abundant (as they are at this location). |
Another uncommon plant found here is Darlington's Glade Spurge (Euphorbia purpurea) |

Detail - the flowers weren't fully open yet... |
Flowers of Hairy Woodrush (Luzula acuminata) |
Hairy Woodrush, full plant, in habitat I don't pay as much attention as I should to the graminoids (grasses, sedges, rushes). |
Silted up swimming hole and dam (on right), at nearby site of CCC Camp F12 |
I returned a week or so later with Alan C, to catch the Glade Spurge in better bloom. |
Naturally, I had to shoot a few more images of the Dwarf Ginseng |

Harsh lighting, but the Glade Spurge was in better bloom than ten days earlier. |
I saw a Goldenrod Crab Spider (Misumena vatia) hiding in the inflorescence. Much cropped from the original image... |
End of April - I got a report of another plant here that I wanted to see... |
Another "first" for me - One Flowered Cancer Root (Aphyllon uniflorum, syn. Orobanche uniflora) |
The plant is parasitic, and can be locally abundant, although not common. It often goes unnoticed due to its position just above the leaves on the forest floor. |
After finding this nice group, I decided I wasn't going to do any better... |
While looking for the Cancer Root, I couldn't help but take a few pics of some of the hundreds of trilliums still in flower here. The two main species blooming, T. erectum and T. grandiflorum, were winding down with fading flowers, but the massed flowers were still a sight to behold. With rain right up to my arrival, many of the flowers were kind of soggy... |
