Early October, 2020 - Some late season flowers After a month of sciatica, my back & leg were finally showing some improvement. After a few short flat hikes, I gave myself a trial run with some elevation change. Just 600 feet over a mile distance, but enough to check it out, and not so much that I might cripple myself! I got through it pretty well, although the leg needs more strengthening. |

Red Turtlehead (Chelone obliqua) |
Note the white staminode and the yellow-bearded palate |
A nice trio of flowers |
When I found this population a year ago, only one flower remained. Luckily, this year I caught them earlier and in good bloom. |
There is also a nice population of gentians in the area. |
Appalachian Gentian, aka Showy Gentian (Gentiana decora) |
A peek inside |
These plants were mostly just coming into bloom when I visited. |
Kidney-leaf Grass of Parnassus (Parnassia asarifolia) There is only a smattering of this plant here, and they were about done blooming. In fact, this was the only decent looking flower that remained... |
I spotted a very interesting fungus growing on an old downed tree trunk... |
It is Coral Tooth Fungus (Hericium coralloides), which is related to Lion's Mane fungus. |
One of several Aster species growing in the area. I think this is New England Aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae). |
