1 - August 17, 2020 I checked out an area of Chunky Gal Ridge that I hadn't explored before. I hoped to explore a bog but it was all grown over when I reached the spot. On my way back I came across a nice find... |
Green Wood Orchid, aka Club Spur Orchid (Platanthera clavellata) I found a large seepy area on the side of the mountain where tons of these were growing. |
I believe this is Golden Spindles (Clavulinopsis fusiformis) |
I'm not sure what this right-of-way marker was for, seemingly in the middle of nowhere... |
Stalked Puffball-In-Aspic (Calostoma cinnabarinum) |
Yellow (or Orange) Fringed Orchid (Platanthera ciliaris) I was surprised to see this single plant in flower along the old woods road. |
Appalachian Oak Leech (Aureolaria levigata) |
Southern Monkshood (Aconitum uncinatum) |
Rose Pink (Sabatia angularis) |
One of the Lobelias (Lobelia sp.) |
2 - August 18, 2020 On my way back to the truck the previous day (above), I had noticed that I was walking through a colony of Three Birds Orchids. I could see that there would be a bloom the next day. After photographing the TBOs at our home (which were on the same bloom cycle), I headed back up to Chunky Gal to see these ones. |

Three Birds Orchid (Triphora trianthophora) |

A group of Three Birds Orchids |
The flowers of the Three Birds Orchids are typically white, but we are lucky to see some nice color variation in this area. |
Another colorful specimen... |
A pretty colored flower |
I noticed some spent Coral-root Orchids (Corallorhiza sp.) in the vicinity. |
