I wanted to check the status of some orchids I had seen growing here last fall. It was a rather soggy mid-May day: |
I located the targeted orchids, they were just in bud; probably Lesser Purple Fringed Orchid (Platanthera psycodes). There is a pretty nice population of these growing here... |
I was still seeing Showy Orchis (Galearis spectabilis) Every time I think these are bloomed out for the season, I find another freshly flowered plant. |
Canada Mayflower (Maianthemum canadense) |
Narrowleaf Cow Wheat (Melampyrum lineare) |
Colorful leaf of Wild Geranium (Geranium maculatum) |
Returning a week later, I found many orchids opening their flowers, and one plant at almost peak bloom: |
Platanthera psycodes in bud |
Another plant, just opening its flowers |
I found one nice inflorescence nearing its peak |

I was still seeing some Speckled Wood Lily (Clintonia umbellulata) |
Wood Betony (Pedicularis canadensis) |
Indian Cucumber Root (Medeola virginiana) |
Another week passed, and I was hoping to see these orchids at full bloom: |
Ahhh, lovely! |
Several examples of these beauties follow: |

A nice pair of small racemes |

I took a different route on my return, and found a few more interesting things: |
Broad-leaf Waterleaf (Hydrophyllum canadense) |
I saw quite a few American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) plants coming into bloom. |
Darlington's Glade Spurge (Euphorbia purpurea) going to seed. |
Tassel Rue (Trautvetteria caroliniensis) growing along a creek. |
I think this big old stump is from an American Chestnut (Castanea dentata). |
