1 - Early July: |
Trillium gone to seed... |
Coral fungi (Ramaria sp?) |
A pair of Pinesap (Monotropa hypopitys) |
Downy Rattlesnake Plantain Orchid (Goodyera pubescens) |
I spotted a colony of orchids in a low swale |
The orchids were in bud; most likely Platanthera clavellata |
2 - Late July, more orchids: |
Two weeks later, the orchids were starting to flower, and I was certain of their identification: Green Woodland Orchid, aka Club Spur Orchid or Green Rein Orchid (Platanthera clavellata) |
A nice group of Downy Rattlesnake Plantain |
Appalachian Bunchflower (Veratrum parviflorum) |
This made my day; seeing this species was a first for me. Only a handful of sites are known in Georgia. |
Purple Fringeless Orchid (Platanthera peramoena) |
Close-up of a single flower |
Some racemes were mostly still in bud, |
While others were partially bloomed out... |
Scarlet Beebalm (Monarda didyma) |
