Mid April 2019: |
The Swamp Pinks were in fine form this year |
Swamp Pink (Helonias bullata) |
The Trout Lilies were also blooming quite well |
Trout Lilies (Erythronium umbilicatum) |
I spotted a beautiful Luna Moth (Actias Luna) |
Five days later, I returned to check on another area: |
I was hoping to see Painted Trilliums (Trillium undulatum), but only found one blooming. |
Likewise, Catesby's Trillium (Trillium catesbaei) was also just starting to bloom here. |
I returned four days later to check the progress: |
While looking for more Painted Trilliums, I came across a stand of Lady's Slippers |
Pink Lady's Slippers (Cypripedium acaule) |
I found a few more Painted Trilliums in bloom. |
Wild Geranium (Geranium maculatum) |
Amicalola Trilliums (T. amicalola) were slow to bloom as usual. Like last April, I only found one blooming. They don't typically open here until May, |
Appalachian Phacelia (Phacelia dubia) Very uncommon in these parts. I had heard that there might be some here, but had looked in the wrong area previously. |
Mid June: |
First Indian Pipes (Monotropa uniflora) of the year |
Poke Milkweed (Asclepias exaltata), in bud |
Fire Pink (Silene virginica) |
