Mid April: |
Dwarf Iris (Iris verna) |
Green and Gold (Chrysogonum virginianum) |
A pair of Catesby's Trillium (Trillium catesbaei) |
Trillium erectum |
I suspected that these were Wood Lilies (Clintonia sp.), but the hairy stems made me wonder... |
Barren Strawberry (Geum donianum, syn. Waldsteinia fragarioides) |
In late April, I returned to check the blooms on the suspected lilies: |
Sure enough, the plants were Speckled Wood Lilies (Clintonia umbellulata) |
The flowers were just coming into bloom |
Several examples follow... |
Ten days later (early May), another visit: |
Partridge Berry (Mitchella repens) |
The Wood Lilies were fully in bloom |
An example of the dense growth of the lilies |
These flowers had an uncommon color variation. |
Very light speckling on this plant |
Another plant with color variation |
Fairy Wands (Chamaelirium luteum) |
Fairy Wand - male flower stalk |
Female flower of the Fairy Wand |
Another common name for this species is Devil's Bit. |
Large-flowered Heartleaf (Hexastylis shuttleworthii) |
The jug flowers are much larger than the more common Heartleaf |
Jugs |
Vasey's Trillium (Trillium vaseyi) |
Foamflower (Tiarella cordifolia) |
