1 - Early June, 2023: Tom Govus and I led a GA Botanical Society field trip to the two Nature Conservancy fens, one in GA and one in NC. I don't take many photos when leading trips, but wanted to get a few of the Platanthera lacera. |
Ragged Fringed Orchid (Platanthera lacera) |
While not rare, this species is uncommon in Georgia. |
Tom and I made a scouting trip a few days before the field trip. |
Most of these photos were taken on that day. |
We found about 8 blooming stalks on our pre-field trip visit. Taking a closer look with the larger group, we saw 20 during the actual field trip. |

Bog Candles, aka Swamp Candles (Lysimachia terrestris) These were just starting to bloom when we did our scout trip, but were flowering considerably better a few days later. |
Hop Trefoil (Trifolium sp.) |
2 - Late September, 2023: I was invited to accompany Wesley Knapp and Jim Brighton on a visit here. They are both real botanists well above my pay grade and were excited to explore this site. It's always a highlight for me to see the Rose Coreopsis, and Wes and Jim identified a number of species that were unrecorded for the site. |
Rose Coreopsis, aka Pink Tickseed (Coreopsis rosea) |
Rose Coreopsis The population was past prime bloom, but there were still plenty of nice looking flowers. |

Dwarf Burhead (Helanthium tenellum) I never would have noticed this diminutive flower if it hadn't been pointed out to me. |
Creeping Eryngo (Eryngium prostratum) Another tiny flower, considerably smaller than other Eryngos that I'm familiar with. |
Three -way Sedge |
Canadian Rush (Juncus canadensis) |
Yellowseed False Pimpernel (Lindernia dubia) Yet another miniscule bloom that you almost have to be looking for! |
