1 - Mid May Not all of the Buck Creek area is dunite/serpentine barrens; you can also find spots with more of a rich cove environment. I visited an area that I hadn't really explored much of, partly because I wanted to see if I might find more Yellow Lady's Slippers, among other things... |
On my way, I saw many Indian Paintbrush (Castilleja coccinea) still in bloom. |
There was lots of Phlox blooming |
As well as lots of Wild Geranium (Geranium maculatum) |
I quickly came across a pair of Large Yellow Lady's Slippers (Cypripedium parviflorum var pubescens) |
Still seeing Star Chickweed (Stellaria pubera) in bloom |
Soon after, I found a Small Yellow Lady's Slipper (Cypripedium parviflorum var parviflorum) |
Hemlock Varnish Shelf (Ganoderma tsugae) |
Speckled Wood Lily (Clintonia umbellulata) |
Chicken of the Woods (Laetiporus sulphureus) |
I saw a few more of the Large Yellow Lady's Slippers (Cypripedium parviflorum var pubescens) |

In one area, I saw a lot of Four-leaved Milkweed. (Asclepias quadrifolia) |
2 - Glade Gap I hadn't seen a certain small parasitic plant this spring, so went over to a nearby spot where I've found it in the past. |
One-flowered Cancer Root (Orobanche uniflora), an annual parasitic plant. |
A pair of Orobanche uniflora I didn't see many today, although I didn't spend a lot of time looking. |
Flowers of Wild Sarsparilla (Aralia nudicaulis) |
3 - Early June There is a spot where I often find a single Fairy Wand, so I went to see if it might be in bloom. |
Fairy Wand, aka Devil's Bit (Chamaelirium luteum) I couldn't find the plant I have seen in prior years, but found this one about 100 feet away. |
Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius) |
Still saw some Indian Paintbrush blooming Naturally I had to take a few pics, since this is the only area I see the species. |
