1 - Early April The second stop in my first 2023 spring visitation to four nearby areas. |

A carpet of Bluets (Houstonia sp.) |
Trailing Arbutus (Epigaea repens) This species was about finished blooming for the year, but I found a few remaining flowers. |
Serviceberry flowers (Amelanchier arborea) |
Carolina Vetch (Vicia caroliniana) |
One of my favorites, Indian Paintbrush (Castilleja coccinea) |

This is the only population of this species growing close to me that I know of. |

A nice bunch of Hexastylis ruthii (Appalachian Heartleaf) I counted 20 little brown jugs in this clump. There's been much discussion about whether this is a new species (see Weakley), but I'm just calling it H. ruthii for now. |
Gaywings, aka Fringed Polygala (Polygaloides paucifolia) |
Gaywings |
Gaywings I had seen a few scattered plants in prior years, but found a much more extensive population nearby this year. |
