Noticing that I had never visited the Barrens prior to mid-June, I decided to make a May exploration. Exploring a different area than usual, I struck a bonanza, finding Indian Paint Brush in full bloom! |

On the way in - Wild Geranium (Geranium maculatum) |
Also along the trail - Hearts A'Bustin' (Euonymus americanus) |
Mountain Laurel (Kalmia latifolia) |
The open Barrens were covered with Indian Paintbrush, Phlox, and Blue-eyed Grass. |

Indian Paintbrush is not a common find for me; we don't have the myriad species seen by our friends out west. I typically get my fix here at the Barrens, finding a few scattered plants on each visit. I mentioned earlier, I had never been to the Barrens earlier than mid-June. Now I realized that I had always visited too late for the peak bloom period of this plant; I saw hundreds today, growing thick among Phlox and Blue-eyed Grass. |
