Buck Creek Barrens September 2019 |

With a late summer drought, I wasn't sure how the fall wildflowers would be doing at the Barrens. I visited one side of the site on one day, and the other side on the following day. Day 1 - September 2019: |
Canada Burnet (Sanguisorba canadensis) |
Curtiss' Milkwort (Polygala curtissii) Previously incorrectly identified here as Polygala nuttallii. |
One of the larger Aster (Symphyotrichum sp.) flowers that grow at the Barrens. There are so many Aster species here that I get confused trying to identify them... |
Soapwort Gentian (Gentiana saponaria) |
I love the deep blue color of this population. |
These were looking as good as I've ever seen them. |
Large-leaf Grass of Parnassus (Parnassia grandifolia) |
The Parnassia here was already past its prime... |
And I'm sure the recent drought hadn't helped. This genus prefers wet feet... |
Fringed Gentian (Gentianopsis crinita) |
Only a few plants were up at this location this year. There was some digging visible at the site; I sure hope it wasn't poachers... |
Day 2 - September 2019: |
Fringed Gentian (Gentianopsis crinita) |
A pollinator peaking out... |
A larger population of Gentians grows here than where I was the day before... |
A nice pair |
A few more examples: |
Parnassia grandifolia One of the few decent blooms still remaining at this spot... |
Stiff Gentian (Gentianella quinquefolia) Not as showy as the Fringed Gentians, but a nice species to come across... |
