GPCA Bog Conservation Network visit - site & plant survey and flower pollination: |
A beautiful bog, with water slowly flowing through the peat moss... |
This is one of very few sites in Georgia where Small Spreading Pogonia (Cleistesiopsis bifaria) grows. We found five of these rare plants in bloom on this visit. A sampling of images follows: |

Pogonia 5, which appeared to have sustained some damage from ? |
Mountain (or Southern Appalachian) Purple Pitcherplant (Sarracenia purpurea ssp. purpurea var. montana) Another uncommon plant growing at this site. |

Pitcher plant flower, going to seed |
The pitcher plants appear to be doing well here |

Healthy peat moss Unlike most recent visits to N. Georgia bogs, there were no signs of recent hog damage (knock on wood!)... |
