In mid October, I visited three bogs in the Standing Indian - Upper Nantahala Basin: 1 - Bog A I made a quick revisit to this bog to check for any new fall blooms... |

Nodding Ladies' Tresses (Spiranthes cernua) They were past their prime but a few stalks still looked good... |
Odd to see a violet blooming, and odder yet to find one with this color and markings. |
Possibly Viola cucullata, maybe a hybrid... |

2 - Bog B I visited this bog to see if I could find any Cotton Grass. I had tried to enter the bog back in August but was stymied by deep water channels.. |

Cotton Grass, aka Bog Cotton (Eriophorum virginicum) |
This plant is considerably more common in the north, although it can be found along the band of the Appalachians and other scattered locations in the south. |
These were well past their prime, but it was still great to find them. |

Another view from the bog interior... |

3 - Bog C This was my first visit to this large bog. My point of entry was soon blocked by a deep channel and I didn't have time to look for another entrance... |
