Sunsets 2022 A series of sunsets on Lake Chatuge, Aug-Sept 2022 |

One evening in late August, 2022, I noticed a beautiful sunset through the trees from our yard. Although I couldn't see the sunset itself, it had lit up much of the western sky with deep reds and yellows, similar to some of our brilliant winter sunsets. I hadn't photographed any sunsets for a while, so decided that the next evening, I would go down to the lake and hope for a decent show. I did that, and continued my evening visits to the same area for a number of weeks. Being the wrong time of year, I never did capture one of those vast brilliant skies like I had failed to photograph on that first day. But there was so much variety in what I did see that I thought I would post this series showing the diversity of evening skies that could be seen from one location over a month's time. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

August 24 |
A large cloud bank blocked the sunset and much of the post-sunset sky. Unfortunately, this would often be the case over the next few weeks... |
August 25 |
With scattered clouds after a rain-storm blew off, it looked like there was potential for a nice sunset. |
But the clouds got "stuck" at the horizon, blocking both the sunset and much of the after-glow. The clouds still made for a pretty sky, though... |
August 26 |
The clouds again occluded the actual sunset. |
So another evening where it was all about the clouds! |
And the glowing sky... |
August 27 With an overcast sky, I wasn't expecting much of a sunset, but seeing a glint of brightness to the west, I went down to take a look. |
Nothing great, but a band cleared above the horizon, allowing for some post sunset color. A few kayakers were out and about in the cove... |
August 28 Up to now, I'd been shooting the post-sunset after-glows over Lake Chatuge, which were considerably more colorful than the sunsets themselves. |
Tonight, there wasn't much after-glow at all, but this was the view as the sun dipped below the horizon. |
August 29 I almost didn't go down for the sunset this evening. There was hardly a cloud in the sky, not exactly conducive for colorful sunsets. |
There was just a narrow band of color, thanks to a few clouds at the horizon. |
What made it exciting, however, was having a small float plane take off right beside me. You can see the plane in the sky to the left of the sun glow. |
August 30 |
Too much overcast, with just a narrow opening at the horizon... |
September 1 Things looked promising in late afternoon; the clouds to the west were in perfect formation to produce a stunning sunset. Unfortunately, that was about four hours too early! |
By the time sunset arrived, most of those those clouds were long gone... |
September 3 After a rainy day, the main overcast cleared out, and left a nice bunch of alto cumulus clouds in the western sky. It again seemed like a perfect set-up for a gorgeous sunset. |
Until I arrived, and could see a thick stratus or cumulonimbus cloud directly at the horizon, smack dab in the middle of where the sun would set. |
September 6 Can't catch a break lately trying to hit a nice sunset here... |
Once again, a dark cloud settled in right at the point where the sun sets... |

September 8 If you'd been with me this evening watching the sun set, you would have probably agreed that the sunset itself was pretty much a dud. |
But turning around 180 degrees and facing the east... |
...brought a whole different scene into view, |
...with some pretty cool cloud formations. |
I hung around for about 10-15 minutes after the sun set, and watched this tiny band at the horizon glow bright red for maybe a minute before going dark.. |
September 12 I stopped on the way home from our monthly Historical Society meeting to photograph the sunset. |
Nothing to write home about, but at least there was a little color. |
September 13 |
A couple of kayakers were out the following evening. |
September 14 After visiting with some friends, we went over to see if there might be a decent sunset. |
The sunset itself wasn't much, but there was a nice glow under the clouds about 10 minutes later. |
Just prior, for the second time in two weeks, a small floatplane took off from the cove. As before, my camera settings were set for the sunset, so I didn't get a great pic of the plane, although you can see it ascending to the left of center. |

Sunset |
September 22 After a week of clear skies, there were scattered clouds to the west, so I went down for another attempt. |
While the sunset wasn't particularly special, I liked the juxtaposition of this fallen tree in the frame. The position of the sun had shifted over the past month, so I'd had to locate a new shooting spot... |
