Old Homesite FA01 - near Long Branch, Fannin Co., GA February 2020 An interesting site; it shows on the 1898 map...

Old chimney / fireplace
That's a robust lintel stone! This property was acquired by the USFS from G.H.B. Neal in 1940.
The large home here once had a chimney on each end. The one in the foreground long ago collapsed into a pile of stone.
The house site was built on a terrace with rock-lined vertical facing.

Old Homesite FA02 - Fannin Co., GA February 2020 Not quite the vintage of the site above; this one first appears on the 1946 maps.
Stone chimney, with hole for a stove-pipe above the fireplace. This property was acquired by the USFS from William T. Martin in 1968.
Unlike typical older chimneys, the fireplace here is almost 3 feet above ground level, indicating a sizable crawl space under the ground floor.
This appears to be a chimney for an outdoor cooking / grill area.

This looks like an old concrete swimming pool. There are steps leading down in the near corner. It is considerably bigger than any home pool. I was told that there was a boy's camp here sometime in the 1960s.

Old Homesite TO11 - near Big John Crk, Towns Co., GA March 2020 I got wind of the occurrence of an old chimney high up on a mountainside in the Upper Hightower area. I didn't have a lot to go on, but decided to search for it in early March. Had no luck finding it; there was a lot of steep territory to cover in there. I did come across another interesting old home site, although there were no standing chimneys. It consisted of several large terraces with rock retaining walls, a raised mound/terrace for the house (with two collapsed chimney piles, a large stone foundation possibly for a barn, and several other stone walls and structures.
Stone foundation wall I think this may have been for a barn, the other parts of the foundation are mostly obscured by deadfall in this view.
Retaining wall for a large terrace The smaller terrace/mound for the house site can be seen in background.
House terrace / mound It has a stone retaining wall lining three of the four sides. The two collapsed chimneys are faintly visible at left and right sides.
From the house mound, view toward another retaining wall. This property was purchased by the USFS from Anderson Eller in 1938.

Retaining wall, for another terrace.

Old Homesite UN04 - near Flat Creek, Union Co., GA March 2020 I wasn't having much luck on this day finding old homesites at a location shown on a 1911 map. I finally made my way down to a creek where a 1938 map showed an old mill and a nearby home site.

Collapsed stone chimney.

Rear of collapsed chimney. This property was purchased by the USFS from Pat Haralason in 1949.

I found the mill site; all that remains is the old breached mill dam.
