March 2022 Old Homesite JA01 - Jackson Co., NC
While exploring some waterfalls, I came across this old homestead:
Looking across a creek, I noticed a series of rock terrace walls.
Further up, I spotted another wall and the remains of a chimney.
Front of the partially collapsed chimney.

The old homesite was situated on a rise alongside the creek.
Plantain-leaved Sedge (Carex plantaginea) There was a lot of this growing in the area.
Carex plantaginea inflorescence.
I saw thousands of Hepatica acutiloba in bud, but only a few had opened.
A moss and lichen covered rock Including Cat-tongue Liverwort (Conocephalum salebrosum)
One of several interesting boulders along my explorations.

Unusual configuration on this pair of chimneys. One stone, one brick; both facing the same direction, but situated catty-corner about 100 feet apart.

Bugscuffle vicinity... The property was owned by a Mr. Collins in the early part of the 20th century, but I don't know if this was his house.
Some critter built a large nest in this chimney, but all the twigs and thatch have washed down through the fire box. A wisteria vine has also wormed its way into the chimney.

Old Homesite CL07 - Clay Co., NC
A friend told of his mother seeing the chimney of his great-grand- parents' home in the woods near Warne many years ago. I went looking for it, but unfortunately found it had collapsed long ago.
The old cellar hole was still readily visible.
But the chimney was just a long-ago collapsed pile of rocks. Lots of daffodils were blooming in the open area to the rear.
I did come across a population of Pink Lady's Slippers (Cypripedium acaule)
From a distance, I thought this might be one of the rarer alba (white) forms, but it was just a pale pink.
There were about 40 plants in bloom here.

I haven't found out much about this chimney on Bald Mountain.
