Botanical finds photographed during various short expeditions in 2022. These visits are in addition to the other wildflower albums found on our website. 1 - Union County, GA - April 2022 I was planning to visit my "go-to" location for Goldenseal, but heard that the population of plants there had been all torn up by something. Maybe hogs, but hopefully not poachers. I decided to check another population. The plants here were looking pretty good, but I did see hog sign close by. |
I found a couple of patches of Goldenseal; neither patch was very thick with plants. |

Goldenseal is ranked S2 (Endangered) in Georgia |

I came across several nice populations of ramps (Allium tricoccum). |
A lot of folks don't know that ramps produce flowers. Here's the spent umbel from one of last year's flowers. |
Showy Orchis (Galearis spectabilis) I only saw a few of these here, and only 1-2 had fully bloomed. This one only had two flowers but was further along than others. |
Bear Corn (Conopholis americana) A common parasitic plant, but I like to photograph them when I see a nice clump. |
Foamflower (Tiarella nautila) Until recently, these had been classified as Tiarella cordifolia, but have now been split into five species. |
Carolina Silverbells (Halesia carolina) |

2 - Union County, GA - Late May, 2022 Small Spreading Pogonia (Cleistesiopsis bifaria) is rare in Georgia, with just a handful of recorded occurrences. My friend Rod spotted this population last year, and we photographed them in late May / early June. With clear skies, the mid-day sun was relentless today; luckily I had an umbrella for a sun shade. Here's a sampling of the 30-40 flowering plants I saw... |

The flower colors range from white to pink |

This may be too many pics of these orchids, so I'll end here! For 2021 Cleistesiopsis bifaria photos from this site, scroll to the end of this page: Spring 2021 Assorted Botanical Finds |
