More botanical finds photographed during miscellaneous explorations in the late Spring of 2021. These short outing photos are supplemental to the full wildflower albums found on our website. 1 - Rabun County, GA - May 5, 2021 Large Whorled Pogonias I hadn't visited this site in a couple of years. It was sort of a rushed visit, since I had to get home for a Cinco de Mayo lunch with Elaine and friends, and I again missed seeing a plant with double blooms. |

The Small species (I. medeoloides) is supposed to be rarer here, but I know of more locations for it than the Large (I. verticillata)! I may have to discuss that with my DNR friends... |
|
I only know of a few Georgia sites where these are found... |

2 - Union Co., GA - May 19, 2021 Small Whorled Pogonia Last year (2020), we rediscovered a population of Small Whorled Pogonias (Isotria medeoloides) at this site. We found 15 plants, although none bloomed in 2020. Returning to monitor that site today, I found three plants in flower, although they were past their prime. Reminder to go earlier next year! (Note: Unfortunately, none bloomed in 2022...) |

3 - Union Co., GA - June 2, 2021 Small Spreading Pogonia I was surprised to see these growing, in a disturbed dry area of terrible soil. The one site where I've seen them in the past is a moist area with much richer soil. But apparently the species tolerates both wet and dry conditions. This species has only a handful of recorded occurrences in Georgia. Like a number of other species in our state, it may be under-reported. |
