Autumn Color - 2018 | All Text & Images: Copyright (2018) |
2018 fall foliage images from our home and local area... There was very little color change until the last few days of October. Then, almost overnight, the leaves started to turn with a vengeance! |
Oct. 29 - Leaves were mostly green, but scattered trees were showing some nice colors... |
Oct. 31 - the color was starting to look good on the slope behind our house. |
Near our house, I spotted some Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) with its distinctive yellow autumn leaves. |
November 2 - Just two days later, and the colors were really popping: |
Returning home from town, I shot some images along Upper Bell Crk Rd |

Another view of the landmark Bell Knob, taken a few miles from the earlier shot which included the Knob. |
Coming up our driveway, the foliage was impressive |
Our cabin to the right, with the house visible through the trees further up... |
The photos don't really do justice to the vibrancy of the leaf colors. |

My truck heading up our driveway... |
Some nice reds at the end of our road... |
Nov. 5 - Tusquitee Mountains vicinity... I drove up to the east side of the range, checking out the foliage along Tuni Gap Rd, and down to Nantahala Lake: |
A pretty reflection in the pond! |

View towards Wayah Bald from Nantahala Lake. The foliage was already past peak on this side of the mountain range... |
Nantahala lake is maintained as a hydroelectric source, and water levels are typically drawn down for winter. |
I took a short trek along Big Tuni Creek |

The next several images are views of the colors as I returned along Tuni Gap Rd |
The sky was clouding over by this time... |
Julie Knob When I passed this spot on my way up the mountain, there was a beautiful light shining on the colorful peaks. I almost stopped, but decided to wait until my return, when there should be even nicer late afternoon lighting. Unfortunately by the time I returned, the entire sky had clouded over. |
Nov. 6 With clear skies the following afternoon, I swung by again; even though overnight winds and rain had stripped off some of the colorful foliage, the late afternoon sunlight made up for it! |

Eagle Mtn, and our neighborhood from Low Gap Considerably more dramatic lighting than a similar image of the same view near the top of this page... |
