May 2019 Our friend Joan was visiting from Oregon, and we were coming back from the John Campbell Folk school. We made a stop at Fires Creek to see what was blooming. |

It's too bad we hadn't been here a week or two earlier. This Showy Orchis (Galearis spectabilis) would have been spectacular! |

Stone cistern near the Bristol Horse Camp. |
September 2021 A few years ago, I had come across a large colony of Pinesap up past the Bristol Horse Camp. I made a short visit up there today, but I was too early, and the plants were just now emerging. |

Appalachian Red Pinesap (Hypopitys lanuginosa) One of the few plants that was fully emerged... |

Orange mushroom, perhaps a Hygrocybe species(?) |
Spotted Jewelweed (Impatiens capensis) |
September 2022 A year later, I tried again, and this time I was too late! From year to year, you can never tell exactly when plants are going to bloom. |
Appalachian Red Pinesap (Hypopitys lanuginosa) I only found this single flowered plant still in bloom. The rest had gone to seed, like the one visible in the background. |

American Spikenard (Aralia racemosa) |
American Spikenard, showing leaves. We are at the southern edge of this species' range, and, while not rare, I seldom come across it. |
