1 - I visited Little Cedar Knob, where I looked for an odd rock cairn that I had heard about... |
A couple of views from the rock outcrops near YJ Gap. |
The Cairn This cairn is hollow, about 7 feet high, and has a "window" near the bottom. |
I have no idea what its purpose was (if it had one)... It doesn't look particularly old, although it has some vines growing up through the rocks. |
View through the "window" of the cairn's interior. |
Among the odd features is the flat slab placed precariously on the side of the cairn. |

2 - Just downstream from the Shope Fields on Coopers Creek lies the remains of an old stone dam. "The Heritage of Union County" mentions two dams across the creek in this area. At first I thought this was the dam built to power the mill run by Thomas Harkins & John Shope, but further research makes me believe its the "dam made of mountain stones", which had sluice gates to float logs down to the Toccoa River to be sawn into lumber. |
Coopers Creek at the old dam site If you weren't looking for it, you might not ever see it... |
The breached dam is seen here on the far side of the creek. There is another breach at the left, where a small channel creates a long island in the creek. |
Exposed rocks from the dam's core on the near side. For more photos of this dam, taken from the other side of the creek on a later exploration, click here: |

The lighting was horrible, so I didn't take many photos. |
