December 2019 I spent an afternoon exploring for old home places and chimneys that showed on the old maps in the Rock Creek vicinity. |
At the first site (FA10), I found the remains of the old chimney. |
Only the lower section remained standing. |
Side view |
And an oblique view |
Heartleaf (Hexastylis sp.) growing on an old log |
At the second homesite location, I found a short stone wall. |
And then another one nearby... |
This may be the home site's (FA11) collapsed chimney. |
The third site (FA12) was some distance away; it was getting late when I found it. It had two collapsed chimneys, about 16 feet apart. |
The structural form is still apparent at the base of the west chimney. |
West chimney, from a higher angle. From the thick moss, it appears these chimneys have been collapsed for a long time... |
Remains of the east chimney. At first I wondered if these were part of one chimney, but each had a distinct base. A lot of the stones has apparently been hauled away. |
There are a lot of large White Pines in here. This one measured about 13 ft. circumference using arm-spread measurement. |
The fourth homesite had the best chimney I found this day, even if it was just the firebox. |
Site FA13 - Chimney front, from the opposite side.... |
Chimney from the rear |
January 2020 With time running out on my earlier visit, I was unable to explore one other site where the old maps showed a home site. I visited that location in late January. |
Approaching my search area, I encountered evidence of a severe wind event. |
Near the edge, I found the remains of yet another collapsed chimney. |
Site FA14 - Another portion of the chimney. As with many of the others, this chimney has been on the ground for many decades... |
