Helton Creek - Upper Falls I couldn't stay at this spot (left side of the base) for long; the spray was blowing at me and soaking the camera lens.

I visited this normally low-flowing waterfall after several days of rain. It was roaring, but was too choked with rhododendron for any clear shots.

In early 2019, I was searching for some old home sites in the Southern Nantahala Wilderness Area, just south of the GA-NC state line. I came across these two falls in my explorations:

My friend Sheldon told me they had come across this waterfall when he worked for the USFS. This is a photo he took in the 1990s.

I've had this waterfall in my sights for several years. While not a long hike, it is in a steep gorge choked with rhododendron and mountain laurel thickets, plus tons of deadfall & blow-down. The only two folks I know who've been to this falls both ended up going up the creek as the path of least resistance. I decided to try a different route, coming down from an adjacent ridge while working around the surrounding cliffs. It was still a hellacious scramble, but at least I made it there and back with dry feet!
