Another Pipevine Swallowtail on a Turk's Cap |
Flower colors ranged from light orange to almost red... |
There were hundreds of butterflies on the lilies... |
Scarlet Beebalm (Monarda didyma) |
The Swallowtails also liked the Phlox. |
Virgin's Bower (Clematis virginiana) |
Coming down the mountain as I was leaving Coweeta, I had to hit the brakes as I encountered this kinked guy stretched across the road. |
Black Rat Snake (Pantherophis spiloides) |
The kinking is a defensive "camouflage" position these snakes adopt to make themselves look like a tree branch-limb on the ground. I think it might be more effective in the woods than on this gravel road! |
I tried to catch the Three Birds Orchids in bloom, but missed them by a day or two. They open fully for only one day, all together as a group. |
Three Birds Orchid (Triphora trianthophora) |
Unfortunately, only a few remained even partially open... |
I would have liked to have seen this clump a couple of days earlier... |
Allegheny Monkeyflower (Mimulus ringens) |
Groundnut (Apios americana) |
