~ Early February, 2021 ~ I spent an afternoon checking out some old home sites on either side of the Chattooga River, in both Georgia and South Carolina: 1 - Old Homesite RA02 - Rabun Co., GA I almost didn't find this chimney off Overflow Creek Rd. It was completely surrounded and covered in dog hobble. It took quite a while to clear it enough so that I could photograph it. |
This was a two-sided chimney, with a pair of fireplaces, on opposite sides This side is in relatively good shape, with a large lintel stone. |
On the opposite side, the lintel stone is gone, and the stones above it have collapsed. Two large flat stones were in the rubble; I believe the original lintel stone broke in two. |
I believe the large stone at the bottom is half of the lintel that was on this side. What appears to be the other half of the stone is just out of the frame on the left. |
Left (above) and right (below) side angles of the "good" side of the chimney... |
At the lower back right corner of the chimney in this image, you can see the other half of what I believe is the broken lintel stone for the back side. |

2 - Old Homesite OC05 - Oconee Co., SC This chimney was in a small flat spot high up on the steep slopes of a spur of Russell Mountain. It is an outstanding example, considering what little still remains in the way of old chimneys. |

But it's the side view that tells the (future) story of this chimney... |
With that lean, I doubt the upper part of this chimney is long for this world... |
Much of the original clay chinking remains in this chimney. |
3 - Old Homesite OC06 - Oconee Co., SC This old homestead is near Fall Creek Road. Although lacking the upper stack, it is a solid chimney. It also had a partial stone foundation, which I somehow neglected to photograph. |

4 - Warwoman Dell, Rabun Co, GA On my way to the river, I made a pit stop here. I have photographed these trout basins before, but it was in summer, and they were all covered with plant growth. |
Trout rearing tanks from the old fish hatchery that was built here by the CCC in the 1930s. CCC Camp F-6 Warwoman, Co. 457, was located just down the road from the Dell. |
