~ March, 2021 ~ I had wanted to look for this chimney a month ago, but the FS road access was blocked by a large tree. I took a different route on this exploration, which involved a 6.8 mile round-trip hike: 1 - Old Homesite RA03 - Rabun Co., GA Near the Eight Ball rapids area of the Chattooga River |
The front & lintel have collapsed but this is still a nice chimney. |
About 11 feet high at its tallest point. |
Chimney from the rear |
Another chimney, mostly collapsed, sits about 25 feet away. |
This chimney was oriented 90 degrees from the first chimney. |
The second chimney, from the rear corner... |
The old homestead was not far from the Eight Ball rock and rapids on the Chattooga. |
I spotted my first spring wildflowers of the season along the trail - Hepatica acutiloba |
Green and Gold (Chrysogonum virginianum) |
A big burl... |
~ February 2021 ~ A month earlier, I had been upstream, looking for another elusive chimney. |
This is First Island, which is downstream from Earl's Ford. |
