Sheldon Henderson and I located the old Casteel 1 Cemetery, in the original settled area of the Ivy Log district of Union County. There were two Casteel cemeteries, one on either side of Ivy Log Creek. This one has only one marked grave, Nancy Ann (or Ann Nancy) Casteel (1833-1861). I counted 40 fieldstone grave markers; considering that some were probably foot-stones, I would guess that we saw 25-30 graves here. |

Nancy Ann Casteel gravestone This is the only engraved stone in the cemetery, although another couple, Mr. & Mrs. George Patterson, are known to be buried here. |

Nancy Ann Casteel gravestone It's difficult to make out through the lichen, but it reads: NANCY CASTEEL WAS BORN 18XX JUNE 26th DEPA RTED THE 6 OF APRILE 1861 The "N"s are backwards, and the birth year is unreadable. She was born in 1833. |
