Walking back up to the quarry rim, we came to the former location of one of the quarry's namesake derricks |
Same area... |
The community property owners have built a stairway for easier swimming access |
Holly dipped her feet in the water |
One can see many bolts, rings, etc. where equipment was attached to the granite. |

Rim of the quarry |
This 1910 view is from generally the same area as the previous photos, although you'd be hard pressed to recognize anything with the quarry filled with water. |
Substantial amounts of a quarry's stone were waste, and dumped into huge "grout piles". This is the edge of one grout pile, about 300 feet long. Much of the tons of "waste" product discarded by the original quarry men would be prized today! |
I'd read that a huge pulley wheel from one of the old derricks was in the woods somewhere next to a grout pile. It took a while to locate, but we finally found it. |
Holly and Alison in front of the wheel, for scale. |
Continuing around the quarry, we came to the narrow cove at lower left of this drone image. |
Alison and Holly walked down to the water to cool their feet, while I sent up the drone. |
Down at the water |

View of the cove / inlet Note another grout pile at the edge of the water to left of center. |
A few more views of the quarry |
While I had the drone up, I could see Johnson's Quarry nearby So we decided to walk over there... |
Unfortunately, when we got there it was all posted with No Trespassing signs, so we didn't enter. Here's a pic from their Facebook page. Back to Quarries Page 1 |
