One of this furnace's arches has collapsed. |
The furnace stack is visible behind the broken outer wall structure. |
The other arch is in relatively good shape. I'm guessing that this is the tuyere arch, although no piping was visible to confirm that. |
When we first approached the furnace, E was startled by this black racer! But it was more scared than her, finding this crevice to keep an eye on us. |
Looking out from inside the arch. |
Looking through the "good" arch at the bosh base. |
Broken interior of furnace. |
View up from base, broken bosh in center. |
West side of furnace from mid-slope. |
Trees growing out of the furnace. At this point, the tree roots are doing more structural damage than any other cause... |
The snake was lying just behind where E is standing in this pic. I was in front of her approaching the furnace and probably stepped right over it, planning my next photo... |
Looking up the furnace stack - loading hole. |
Stack-chimney transition from stone to brick. |
Looking up - trees growing out of wall Looks like a Mayan ruin in Central America... |
Honeysuckle on wall |
From right side, up slope... |
Nice camouflage on this sycamore! |
Section of collapsed wall from another structure up hill from the furnace. |
Daffodils outside remains of other structure |
View from slope behind furnace. A charging ramp would have led from the lip of the slope to the top of the furnace. |
Broken, moss-covered brick |
The last time that Pool Furnace was in blast was 1874. |
